Laser Scanning the M5 Motorway

The imminent closure of the runway at Filton Airport has meant that our client, Airbus UK is having to seek an alternative way of transporting its A400 wings from Filton in Bristol to Toulouse in the south of France.

The 35m long wings are currently flown to Toulouse inside the Beluga Aircraft via Filton Airport which is on its doorstep.

Lewis Brown is part of a team of Consultants investigating the feasibility of transporting the wings from Filton in Bristol along 14km of public roads to Portbury Dock, thus allowing them to be transported by sea.

We are responsible for providing 3D Mapping to the whole team. We will be scanning the entire route of the journey (there and back) to provide a point cloud of measured three-dimensional points which will identify all physical features that may obstruct the sweep path of the extremely large transporter truck that will carry the wings.

The design team will then be able to identify street furniture, gantries, lamp posts, roads signs and other pinch points along the route and arrange for them to be relocated well in advance of the first transportation.
